Refugee Services

Since 1946, Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey has been helping resettle refugees from around the world.
LSM/NJ provides help to newly arrived refugees to find gainful employment in their community. A full range of supportive services is available to help make the transition to a new country successful. The Refugee Employment and Supportive Services program is funded by the Federal Office of Refugee Resettlement through a contract with the State of New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS).
Lutheran Social Ministries’ Refugee Resettlement Program is the largest program of its kind in New Jersey. For the past 60 years, we have extended hope and hospitality to the world’s refugees, those persons forcibly uprooted from their homes and displaced. We receive refugees from all corners of the globe and offer resettlement services without regard to national origin, race, or religion.
During a refugee’s first days and months in this country, basic services, such as housing, counseling, interpreting, enrollment in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, basic social services, and assistance in getting a job, are provided for the refugee by LSM/NJ.
In many cases, LSM/NJ works together with a sponsoring church or relative. In some cases, LSM/NJ alone sponsors a refugee.
The Refugee Resettlement Program is primarily funded by the U.S. Department of State through contracts with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) and Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM).
