English as a Second Language (ESL)

The obstacle of language can prevent some individuals from getting and keeping a job. LSM/NJ's Immigration & Refugee Services has undertaken an innovative program to help those with limited English language skills become more valuable employees and full participants in their communities.
Clients in our English as a Second Language Program receive instruction in English language skills tailored specifically for understanding and functioning in the American workplace. In addition, participants are paired with volunteer “English Language Partners,” who help reinforce skills learned in the group setting. Training tools have been developed to help clients learn how to fill out job applications, introduce themselves, understand common forms used in the workplace, and communicate with supervisors and fellow workers, among other issues.

How does someone enroll?

If you or someone you know could benefit from our English as a Second Language Program, please contact the Immigration and Refugee Services Office.  Participants who are not covered for this service by the Refugee Services Program may be required to pay a fee to receive instruction.

Volunteer opportunities

No previous experience or other language skills are needed to volunteer as a “Language Partner.”  You will be trained in the program.

Training for your workplace

Our agency will come to your workplace and design training in English as a Second Language skills to meet the needs of employers.
