The obstacle of language can prevent some individuals from getting and keeping a job. LSM/NJ's Immigration & Refugee Services has undertaken an innovative program to help those with limited English language skills become more valuable employees and full participants in their communities.
Clients in our English as a Second Language Program receive instruction in English language skills tailored specifically for understanding and functioning in the American workplace. In addition, participants are paired with volunteer “English Language Partners,” who help reinforce skills learned in the group setting. Training tools have been developed to help clients learn how to fill out job applications, introduce themselves, understand common forms used in the workplace, and communicate with supervisors and fellow workers, among other issues.
