Charitable Bequests

Bequests are the simplest way to make a planned gift to Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey. There are many ways to include a bequest in your will to Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey. These include:

• Bequeathing a specific dollar amount or percentage of your estate.
• Indicating which assets (such as stock, real estate, etc.) will be gifted.
• Designating that the “remainder” of your estate (after expenses, bequests to family members, etc.) will go to LSM/NJ.

Stock, Bonds or Mutual Fund Shares

Many people own stock, bonds and/or mutual fund shares. From a tax standpoint, the best securities to consider as a charitable gift are those that have highly appreciated in value since you have acquired them. Many donors review their securities portfolio and select those that have appreciated the most and have been held for more than a year. These donors give securities instead of cash because they have discovered the value and enjoyment of stretching their giving power by giving them appreciated stock. If you are considering making a gift from your securities portfolio, it is important that you arrange for a direct transfer of your securities to Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey and not sell (or instruct your broker to) the securities first.
