Senior Leadership

Elizabeth Sparling

Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer

For Elizabeth (Beth), Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey (LSMNJ) has been part of her life since the day she was born. The daughter of a Lutheran pastor and a registered nurse, Beth was adopted by the couple as an infant through LSMNJ’s adoption program.

Beth attributes her passion for working with seniors and those in need to her family. “I have always appreciated and valued the special gifts and needs of seniors when my grandparents lived with my family for 15 years. I also grew up doing a lot of volunteer and service work through my church and other community outreach … so this career was a natural choice for me.”

After graduating from Elon University (NC) with degree in human services and a concentration in gerontology, Beth gained early experience in senior care as a recreation coordinator and social worker. When LSMNJ opened Crane’s Mill Continuing Care Retirement Community in West Caldwell, NJ, Beth was hired as the director of social services and admission. Soon, she took on positions of increasing responsibility including an 11-year tenure as the health services administrator. In 2013, she became vice-president and executive director--responsible for the overall operation of the 48-acre senior community including independent living residences, a skilled nursing/subacute rehab unit, assisted living apartments, dementia care apartments, and a wellness center.

Named as LSMNJ’s chief operating officer in July 2015, Beth is a licensed nursing home administrator (LNHA), a certified assisted living administrator (CALA), a certified dementia care professional (CDCP), and a certified social worker (CSW).

It may surprise some to know that Beth is equally at home in the great outdoors as she is in her office and visiting with residents or staff.  An avid nature lover, Beth can often be found hiking, snow skiing, or camping….and yes, she puts up her own tent and is adept at building campfires.
