BURLINGTON – January 13, 2009 – The Health Center at Crane’s Mill Continuing Care Retirement Community, in West Caldwell, NJ, scored high marks when The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published results from its new rating system in early December 2008. The facility’s nursing home, The Health Center at Crane’s Mill, received an overall quality rating of five stars – the highest rating possible.

Crane’s Mill Continuing Care Retirement Community, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, offers independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care on its 48-acre campus in West Caldwell. The Health Center at Crane’s Mill currently offers 66 skilled nursing beds, 60 assisted living apartments and dedicated specialized care for residents with dementia. The facility is a program of Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey (LSM/NJ), a faith-based statewide not-for-profit provider of quality senior care services, as well as many other programs and services.

Created to help consumers, families and caregivers compare nursing homes, the rating system is based on continued efforts as a result of the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA ’87), a nursing home reform law, and more recent quality improvement campaigns such as the Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes, a coalition of consumers, health care providers, and nursing home professionals.

A Five-Star Quality Rating from CMS translates into the nursing home being assessed as Much Above Average. A Four-Star rating is Above Average; Three-Star is Average; Two-Star is Below Average; and One-Star is Much Below Average.

Each nursing home’s rating is derived from the compilation of data based on three key areas: health inspections, staffing, and quality measures. CMS provides a star rating for each of these three areas. It then combines the three ratings to calculate an overall rating.

The Health Center at Crane’s Mill received an overall rating of five stars. It also rated five stars for its quality measures, four stars for staffing, and three stars for health inspections (a combination of its last three inspections).

“We are thrilled to have received the highest overall rating possible from CMS,” remarked Beth Mancuso, Health Services Administrator of The Health Center at Crane’s Mill. “The rating is affirmation of our commitment to providing high quality, compassionate care.” Mancuso continues, “The recognition truly belongs to the dedicated staff members who make a difference in the lives of our residents.”

The Nursing Home Five-Star Quality Rating is new and should be used as one of many variables when researching and comparing nursing homes for your loved one. The American Association of Home and Services for the Aging (AASHA) recommends that you use the ‘five-senses test.’ Characteristics such as: community reputation, observation of staff-resident interactions and availability of senior management to address resident and family concerns should also be taken into consideration when making a decision.
